Alfama is the oldest district in Lisbon and one of the few areas that survived the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake. Historically, it was home to sailors, dockworkers, and fishermen. While Baixa (the grand historic center of Lisbon, rebuilt after the earthquake) is undoubtedly a great base for tourists, I preferred the charm and rich history of Alfama. Its medieval narrow streets, the views over the rooftops, and historic buildings adorned with azulejos (traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles), make it truly captivating. It’s also where you’ll find Castelo de São Jorge, as well as the scenic viewpoints of Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro das Portas do Sol. During this three-night stay, being close to everything was essential.
Memmo Alfama
Memmo Alfama is a four-star, adults-only hotel and a member of the international Design Hotels group. It effortlessly blends contemporary style with historical authenticity, featuring interiors that mix rich textures from ancient stone walls to warm wood and leather. Despite extensive renovations, the hotel has preserved its original character and soul, offering a tranquil sanctuary within the vibrant Alfama neighborhood. A sense of comfort is heightened by the meticulous cleanliness, a subtle and pleasant fragrance throughout, and the quality of the design. The redesign of this 19th-century building was led by architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho.
The entrance of Memmo Alfama opens into a charming space that includes a well-stocked library featuring books about Lisbon. From the moment we arrived, the warmth and attentiveness of the staff were evident. We were pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade to their lovely Alfama Room, complete with a sea view. The concierge service was outstanding, assisting us with dinner reservations and train tickets with ease. The hotel also offers a complimentary guided walking tour of the Alfama neighborhood, though unfortunately, we didn’t have time to take advantage of it.
My Alfama Room
Memmo Alfama features 42 rooms designed to evoke the feeling of staying in a stylish Portuguese home. The aesthetic is minimalist yet refined. A handwritten welcome note and chocolates greeted us on arrival, setting a thoughtful and personal tone. Sandy-hued textiles, natural materials, and original stone floors added character to the predominantly white interiors. While the magnetic view was undoubtedly the room’s highlight, I also appreciated the calming atmosphere. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, outfitted with high-quality Egyptian cotton linens and three pillow options. Soundproof walls ensured a peaceful night’s sleep, enhancing the overall sense of comfort and relaxation.
Amenities of Memmo Alfama
The stylish sitting room featuring wooden floors, designer chairs, and sleek tables also serves as the breakfast area. During the summer months, guests can enjoy their breakfast on the upstairs terrace. The buffet includes a well-curated selection of savory dishes alongside delicious pastries like the iconic Portuguese pastéis de nata, offering a true taste of local cuisine. A fridge stocked with a variety of fresh juices and yogurts adds to the freshness of the spread. Additionally, there’s an à la carte menu featuring omelets, crêpes, and other made-to-order options. I absolutely loved the breakfast experience at this hotel — it was a perfect start to each day!
The Wine Bar, located on the terrace, offers stunning views over Lisbon’s iconic rooftops. During the warmer months, guests can relax by the lap pool, surrounded by sun loungers, while in cooler seasons, cozy sofas arranged around a fire pit provide a welcoming retreat. The bar menu features a tempting selection of desserts, fresh salads, and Portuguese tapas designed for sharing. Regional specialties such as croquettes made with Portuguese ham and fillet steak sandwiches add a local flair.
In Conclusion
I absolutely fell in love with Lisbon, especially the Alfama neighborhood, with its iconic yellow trams and historic architecture. The restaurants were exceptional, and the lively atmosphere made every moment enjoyable. For me, Memmo Alfama was the perfect base from which to explore the city and take in its breathtaking rooftop views. Surprisingly, Lisbon has topped the Post Office’s list of the most affordable European cities since 2023, making it an accessible destination for many travelers — unless, of course, you get a bit carried away with shopping! With so much to offer, Lisbon is a city I wholeheartedly recommend.
