Gombit Hotel, Bergamo, Italy

When people think of the Lombardy region in Italy, they might easily overlook the old city of Bergamo amid Italy's countless unmissable destinations. I also have tried to visit Bergamo and its GombitHotel many times, but something always changed the plan. So when I had a chance to return to Italy, I put this hotel first on the list. I fell in love with its architecture and the location in the Upper Bergamo, surrounded by the 16th-century Venetian Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gombit Hotel

The name of the hotel derives from the Latin word 'compitum', which means crossroads. The hotel and its 51,6 meters high tower Torre del Gombito stand on the meeting point of the two main axes of the Roman town, Via Gombito and Via Lupo. The history is still present in the architecture of the hotel. Also, it belongs to the international group of Design Hotels. The design in this place aims to give the clients an experience of luxury and quietude. So I had high hopes for this hotel since a unique structure many times equals a unique experience.

The check-in was polite and smooth. The foyer had some interesting design elements and felt cozy, but it was a small area, so there weren't many places for lounging. But I liked how they used mirrors to give a sense of space. We got a code for the room and found it after a few turns. The lift felt a little wobbly, so we used the stairs instead.

My Deluxe Room

To ensure each client has a wonderful stay, they decided to keep the number of rooms quite small. All 15 rooms have been furnished with style and class with a lot of attention to detail. The beautiful nature-inspired color palette continues throughout the hotel and is very welcoming and calming. The design makes you feel at home from the start, which is exactly how a great design should feel. Our room (Deluxe room number 2) had different tones of beige and drops of red for interest. In addition, I thought that the lighting design added interest to the space and was well thought out. We loved the room, especially the amazing street views from the windows.

The room felt spacious enough even for three adults. The bed was large and comfortable as well as the sofa. We all slept peacefully in this space. The nearby church bell was quite audible in the room, but that stopped at 11 pm. The bathroom was also a good size and nicely finished. They had a great selection of toiletries for the clients to use. Nothing was missing from it!

Wonderful Breakfast

The hotel did not have a restaurant but there was a buffet breakfast. We found everything we needed from their selection. They had, for example, a good selection of fresh fruit and berries, vegetable salad, yogurt, bread, cutlets, cheese, and delicious cake. Also, the décor in the restaurant was beautiful.

In Conclusion

Great design makes you feel at peace, comfortable, and even rejuvenated. You get a sense of belonging. That was the experience this hotel delivered and I was grateful for it. Also, Bergamo was a positive experience. The city is like Italy itself: filled with cobbled alleys, medieval architecture, artisan shops, historic pasticcerie, and expansive views. Gombit Hotel was the right choice for Bergamo since it is located in the center of the city's cultural and historical sites and its architecture is part of the city's inheritance. Bergamo has been chosen as Italy's Capital of Culture for 2023 and now I can understand why.

  3. I always love to read about the origin of the names for places. And it makes sense that the Gambit Hotel originates from a word meaning “crossroads”. It looks like a lovely spot to spend a day or two. Linda (LD Holland)
