Riad Dar Elma & Spa, Marrakech, Marocco

A riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. The term comes from the Arabic word "ryad," meaning garden. With hundreds of gorgeous riads in Marrakech, I couldn’t resist staying in two different ones. For my second accommodation, I chose Riad Dar Elma, located near the epicenter of Marrakech — close enough to walk to the famous attractions yet situated in a peaceful area, about 15 minutes from the renowned JemaĆ¢ El Fna square and the Koutoubia Mosque.

Riad Dar Elma & Spa

For me, a riad is not just accommodation but a unique experience that allows me to dive deeper into the fascinating history and culture of Marrakech. Riad Dar Elma offers a variety of activities, including cooking classes, sightseeing tours, and even hot air balloon rides. The staff at the riad were incredible, taking care of every single detail. Dinners and activities can be booked in advance, ensuring a seamless experience. They made every moment feel special, and I couldn’t be more grateful to them!

In Riad Dar Elma, the authentic Moroccan atmosphere and architecture meet modern comfort. The riad features a large central courtyard with a heated indoor swimming pool, dining tables, and potted plants. There is also a charming little nook with sofas, perfect for lounging or reading. It was also evident that the cleanliness of these spaces was meticulously maintained.

My Superior Triple Room: Nature

This riad features 5 guest rooms, each decorated with a theme inspired by the 4 natural elements (air, fire, water, and earth). Our room was called "Nature," combining all four elements. I loved the authenticity that was evident in the thick walls, wooden window frames, traditional floor tiles, and the curves of the bathroom. The room had a comfortable queen-sized bed and a single bed. Despite being only approximately 20 square meters, the space never felt too small for two people.

The Amenities of Riad Dar Elma

We had the complimentary breakfast at the riad and thoroughly enjoyed it. The breakfast included Moroccan pancakes, a selection of jams and honey, fresh fruit, yogurt, omelette, bread, and cake. The coffee and fresh orange juice were amazing. Each day, the breakfast was slightly different, which I loved.

The cooking class was a special experience for us. It started with a short walk through the marketplace, where we bought the ingredients with a lovely guide. Then, the chef of the riad showed us how to prepare traditional Moroccan tagine with chicken and vegetables, and Moroccan salad. At lunch and dinner, we were able to enjoy the delicious results of the class!

I particularly liked that this riad also had a beautiful rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi. Although the jacuzzi was not in use in December, we thoroughly enjoyed sunbathing and lounging. In the sun, the temperature rose to 18 degrees Celsius, while it was a bit colder in the shade.

The hammam and massage were truly highlights of my visit, and this place provided a wonderful sense of privacy for both experiences. The hammam included a thorough scrub of dead skin with a traditional leather glove and a shower, followed by a skillfully done massage that was the perfect way to relax. If you ever visit Morocco, these experiences are not to be missed! This is the Moroccan way to unwind.

In Conclusion

With its gorgeous rooms, authentic dining experiences, and convenient location, Riad Dar Elma is an ideal choice for travelers seeking an unforgettable Moroccan getaway. Whether you like strolling through the bustling souks or unwinding on the rooftop sundeck, this charming riad offers the perfect blend of modern amenities and traditional hospitality in an enchanting setting. I cannot recommend this riad enough if you're staying in Marrakech!
