Mirabilis Boutique Hotel, Meteora, Greece

For a very long time, I have been fascinated by the pictures of monasteries in Meteora, Greece, and have eagerly awaited a chance to see them myself. The monasteries have been built on steep sandstone cliffs, creating a truly surreal landscape. The first ascetic church was officially built in the 12th century, and until the 17th century, the number grew. Six of the original 24 monasteries are still active and open to visitors. Meteora is the largest archaeological site in Greece in terms of area. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989 and an official holy place in Greece since 1995. Nowadays, Meteora is a popular place for hiking, but the area can also be explored by car.

Since early Christian times, people have come here to achieve absolute isolation, seeking peace and harmony. The time of isolation has passed, but I found peace and harmony at the newly opened Mirabilis Boutique Hotel, which has a peaceful location on the outskirts of Kalambaka, a few minutes drive from the monasteries. I was pleasantly surprised by the fairly affordable room prices in the region and thought that a two-night stay was perfect for exploring the area. They describe the hotel as a place of tranquility, hospitality, and pure quality. I felt very fortunate to have had the chance to experience this.

Mirabilis Boutique Hotel

Mirabilis Boutique Hotel is architecturally strikingly different from the surrounding buildings, with its modern and contemporary aesthetics. The design draws inspiration from the textures and colors of the landscape and natural environment. As the building covers only approximately half of the plot, it stands out beautifully against the backdrop of the mountains and fields. The hotel's name, Mirabilis, derives from the Greek words "mÄ«ror" (to marvel at) +‎ "-bilis" (-able) and "mÄ«rus" (wonderful). No other name could have been more fitting.

I am curious about different interior design possibilities, so I love visiting different types of hotels. As I walked into the lobby of this hotel, I was immediately struck by the floor-to-ceiling windows that stretch across one entire wall, flooding the space with natural light and offering a beautiful view of the magnificent Meteora. I loved the sophisticated scent throughout the hotel and was inspired by the elegant furnishings and high-quality finishes in this space.

The spacious lobby serves as a breakfast room and a living room. There were inviting sofas around a fireplace, which created a welcoming environment. Additionally, the receptionist was very welcoming and helpful in providing information about restaurants in the area, the best viewpoints of the monasteries, and the local shops.

My Deluxe Suite

The hotel has nine contemporary rooms and suites designed with a color palette of grey, black, and white, creating an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. The shade of grey references the local stone found on the rocks of Meteora. The use of indirect lighting, different textures, and wood adds warmth to the rooms, while the selected artworks provide spots of color for interest. The rooms feature eye-catching headboards and double beds dressed with high-quality linens and pillows to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep.

All the rooms feature private terraces or balconies with outdoor furniture. The best way to enjoy the mesmerizing mountain views is to book one of their signature Deluxe Suites, which offer uninterrupted views of Meteora. The spacious suites (31 m²) are located on the second floor and can comfortably accommodate two adults and two children, thanks to the sofa bed. The bathrooms feature a double sink and a walk-in shower. The water pressure in the shower was a little low, and it sometimes took a long time to get hot water, but other than that, I thought the room was exquisite and added a touch of luxury to the stay in Meteora.

Breakfast at Mirabilis Boutique Hotel

The breakfast spread was delightful, offering fresh fruit, vegetables, tempting cakes, cereal, and cold cuts and cheese alongside a cooked-to-order hot breakfast featuring different fluffy omelets, salads, and bread. And of course, no morning meal would be complete without a freshly brewed cup of coffee and orange juice.

Inviting Outdoor Spaces

The outdoor spaces at the Mirabilis Boutique Hotel feature several large terraces and carefully landscaped gardens with loungers and fountains, making it an ideal spot to relax and connect with nature. I loved the calming presence of water in two shallow pools on the main facade of the building. While I am sure I would have enjoyed a swimming pool as well, I found a lot of joy in the beauty of this garden, which was wonderfully lit after sunset.

In Conclusion

This elegant boutique hotel is by far the best accommodation option in the area if you have a car or can use a taxi. It is the perfect place to unwind after all the walking and exploring the monasteries (which have a lot of stairs!). The two-night stay made it possible to visit the monasteries outside of the busiest hours in the mornings and evenings. In addition, I appreciated the relaxing ambiance, thoughtful design, and genuinely kind and warm customer service throughout the visit. Mirabilis Boutique Hotel offers great value for the money and made my visit to Meteora memorable and comfortable. I am very grateful to the whole team!
